Day 1: Colombo Airport to Negombo
We welcomed Liz and Hamish at Bandaranaike International Airport and travelled by private vehicle to Negombo.
Staying in Negombo after an international flight is a practical way to begin a Sri Lanka tour. The town is close to the airport, allowing travellers to rest rather than immediately beginning a long journey inland.
After checking into their accommodation, Liz and Hamish relaxed beside the coast and prepared for the journey ahead.

Day 2: Negombo Fish Market and Lagoon Experience
The second day was dedicated to discovering Negombo and its long connection with fishing and coastal life.
We visited the Negombo Fish Market, where travellers can observe part of the town’s active fishing industry. Conditions and activity levels depend on the day and time of the visit.
Liz and Hamish also enjoyed a Negombo Lagoon boat experience through areas associated with mangroves, fishing communities and birdlife. Boat trips remain subject to local weather and operating conditions.
The remainder of the day was kept relaxed, allowing the guests to enjoy Negombo without an early rush towards the next destination.

Day 3: Negombo to Dambulla and Sigiriya
On Day 3, we left the western coast and travelled inland towards Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.
Our principal cultural stop was the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing Buddhist shrines, statues and paintings created and restored over different historical periods.
Visitors should wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. Footwear must be removed before entering the sacred cave-temple area.
We also visited Dambulla’s produce market, offering Liz and Hamish a glimpse of the fruit and vegetables traded in the region and the routines of everyday Sri Lankan commerce.
We then continued to Sigiriya and allowed time to rest at the hotel before the following day’s activities.

Day 4: Sigiriya, Village Life and the Journey to Kandy
We began the day with an early visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known historic attractions.
The climb includes numerous steps and exposed sections, so travellers should carry water, wear suitable footwear and consider the temperature and their individual mobility.
Liz and Hamish then joined a village experience designed to introduce visitors to aspects of rural life. Depending on local arrangements, the experience may include:
- A bullock-cart journey
- A traditional boat trip
- A short tuk-tuk ride
- A Sri Lankan cooking demonstration
- A locally prepared meal
We continued towards Kandy, stopping at a spice and herbal garden before attending a traditional cultural performance in the evening.

Day 5: Kandy’s Gardens, Temple and Local Hospitality
Day 5 provided time to explore Kandy, the final royal capital of Sri Lanka and an important centre of Buddhist culture.
We visited the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, where visitors can walk among orchids, palms, tropical plants and mature trees. We also stopped at a viewpoint overlooking Kandy and its lake.
Another important visit was the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Travellers should dress respectfully and remain mindful that it is an active place of worship rather than only a sightseeing attraction.
Liz and Hamish also had time to explore local handicrafts and shops, based on their interests.
In the evening, we welcomed them to our home area for a traditional Sri Lankan cooking experience and homemade dinner with the Chathu Lanka Tours family.
Overnight: Kandy
Day 6: Kandy to Ella through Sri Lanka’s Tea Country
We left Kandy and travelled into Sri Lanka’s central highlands, where the scenery gradually changed to mountains, valleys, waterfalls and tea-covered slopes.
Along the route, we visited a tea plantation and factory where Liz and Hamish learned about the production of Ceylon tea. We also stopped near Ramboda Falls when conditions were suitable.
The guests then boarded the scenic train from Nanu Oya towards Ella while the private tour vehicle continued separately by road.
Train-planning note: Reserved seats on popular hill-country trains are subject to availability. They should be requested as early as the official booking arrangements permit, while retaining a road-transfer alternative in case the preferred service cannot be confirmed or is disrupted.

Day 7: Ella Highlights and a Yala Wildlife Safari
The seventh day combined Ella’s mountain scenery with an afternoon wildlife experience.
Activities included a visit to Nine Arch Bridge and a walk towards Little Adam’s Peak. Both activities should be planned according to weather, trail conditions and the travellers’ fitness.
We then travelled south, stopping near Ravana Falls before continuing towards the Yala and Tissamaharama area.
In the afternoon, Liz and Hamish joined a jeep safari in Yala National Park. The park supports elephants, crocodiles, deer, water buffalo, monkeys, numerous bird species and Sri Lankan leopards.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the animals move freely within their natural habitat. A responsible safari should focus on observing the ecosystem without disturbing or crowding wildlife.
Overnight: Tissamaharama or the Yala area
Day 8: Yala to Bentota and the Southern Coast
On the final day of the private touring itinerary, we travelled west along Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
The route ended with a transfer to the guests’ selected beach accommodation in Bentota. Liz and Hamish then continued their holiday independently with several days of coastal relaxation before returning to the UK.
This combination works well for travellers who want to complete an active cultural and wildlife tour before enjoying a slower beach stay.
