Every Sri Lanka tour has its own story, but some journeys remain especially memorable. This private 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary was created for a family of four travelling from Denmark: two parents and their son and daughter.
The family discovered Chathu Lanka Tours through Google and contacted us after reading reviews from previous guests. We discussed their interests, preferred travel pace and the experiences they wanted to enjoy before preparing a personalised itinerary.
Their journey brought together Sri Lanka’s ancient heritage, mountain scenery, village life, tea country, wildlife and southern beaches. Most importantly, the route gave the family time to enjoy each destination without treating the holiday as a race around the island.

This was the family’s actual route. Every private tour can be adjusted according to flight times, weather, train availability, family requirements and preferred travel pace.
Day 1: Arrival in Sri Lanka and Transfer to Negombo
The family arrived in Sri Lanka at night, and we were waiting at Bandaranaike International Airport to welcome them.
Because of their late arrival, we arranged accommodation near Negombo rather than beginning a long journey immediately. Staying close to the airport allowed everyone to rest after the flight and begin the tour feeling refreshed.
This is often a sensible option for travellers arriving late in the evening, particularly families travelling with children.
Overnight: Negombo area
Day 2: Negombo to Sigiriya
After breakfast, we began travelling inland towards Sigiriya and Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.
During the drive, we spoke about the country’s history, communities, food and everyday life. A private tour allows guests to ask questions, stop when needed and experience the journey at a comfortable pace.
A memorable part of the day was lunch at a village home. The family enjoyed freshly prepared Sri Lankan dishes made with local ingredients and traditional recipes. It was an opportunity to experience Sri Lankan hospitality in a relaxed and personal setting.
We later arrived in Sigiriya and checked in at Aliya Resort & Spa. The family spent the remainder of the day relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Day 3: Pidurangala and Village Life in Sigiriya
We dedicated the third day to exploring the Sigiriya area without rushing.
The morning began at a viewpoint overlooking the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress. We then visited Pidurangala Rock, which offers impressive views across the surrounding countryside and towards Sigiriya.
The climb requires suitable footwear and a reasonable level of mobility. The timing should always be adjusted according to the weather, temperature and individual fitness.
Later, the family joined a traditional village experience that introduced them to several aspects of rural Sri Lankan life. Depending on local arrangements and operating conditions, these experiences may include:
- Travelling by bullock cart
- Crossing the water in a traditional boat
- Taking a short tuk-tuk ride
- Learning about household tools and village customs
- Watching traditional food preparation
- Enjoying a locally prepared Sri Lankan lunch
The day provided a meaningful combination of scenery, local culture and family-friendly activities.
Overnight: Sigiriya
Day 4: Sigiriya to Kandy via Dambulla
On Day 4, we left Sigiriya and travelled towards Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital.
Our first major stop was the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This important Buddhist complex contains ancient statues, shrines and paintings created and restored over different historical periods.
Visitors should dress respectfully when entering the temple. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and footwear must be removed before entering the sacred area.
We also visited Dambulla’s local market, where the family saw the variety of fruit, vegetables and spices traded in the region. Experiences such as this provide a closer look at everyday life beyond Sri Lanka’s major tourist attractions.
Additional cultural stops were included along the route, based on the family’s interests and the time available. We reached Kandy in the evening and checked into the hotel.

Day 5: Kandy’s Gardens, Culture and Sacred Heritage
We spent the fifth day exploring Kandy and its surroundings.
The day began at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, known for its extensive collection of tropical plants, orchids, palms and mature trees. The spacious grounds make the gardens an enjoyable stop for both adults and children.
We then visited a viewpoint overlooking Kandy, its lake and the surrounding hills. The family also had time to look for locally made souvenirs and handicrafts.
Later, we attended a traditional cultural performance featuring Kandyan dancing, drumming and colourful costumes. The programme introduced the family to performance traditions associated with Sri Lankan history and culture.
In the evening, we visited the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. As one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist sites, the temple should be visited respectfully, particularly during religious ceremonies.
Kandy is also our home area, so we were delighted to welcome the family for a traditional meal with the Chathu Lanka Tours family. Sharing homemade food and conversation created one of the most personal moments of the journey.
It was more than a scheduled sightseeing stop—it was an opportunity to welcome our guests as friends.

Day 6: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya through Tea Country
On Day 6, we travelled from Kandy into Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
The journey included stops near waterfalls, subject to weather and viewing conditions. As we continued towards Nuwara Eliya, the landscape gradually changed to misty hills, valleys and tea-covered slopes.
We visited a tea factory and plantation where the family learned how Ceylon tea is produced. The experience introduced them to the stages between harvesting the leaves and preparing the finished tea.
After reaching Nuwara Eliya, we explored several of the town’s best-known sights, depending on the available time:
- Nuwara Eliya Central Market
- The historic post office
- The Grand Hotel area
- Gregory Lake
Temperatures in Nuwara Eliya can be considerably cooler than in Sri Lanka’s coastal and lowland regions, so travellers should bring a light jacket.

Day 7: Scenic Train Journey from Nanu Oya to Ella
The family’s hill-country train journey was one of the most anticipated parts of the tour.
Nanu Oya is the railway station serving the Nuwara Eliya area. The family boarded the train there while the tour vehicle continued separately by road to meet them in Ella.
The railway passes through tea plantations, mountain scenery, tunnels and rural communities. Journey times and train conditions can vary, and reserved seats are subject to availability. We therefore retain a road-transfer alternative if the preferred train cannot be confirmed or the service is disrupted.
After arriving in Ella, the family checked into the hotel and had time to relax. In the evening, we visited Ella town for dinner and enjoyed its lively but relaxed atmosphere.

Day 8: Nine Arch Bridge and the Natural Beauty of Ella
Day 8 was dedicated to experiencing Ella at a comfortable pace.
The family visited several of the area’s popular attractions, selected according to weather, energy levels and personal interests:
- Nine Arch Bridge
- Little Adam’s Peak
- Ella viewpoints
- Optional adventure activities
- Cafés and restaurants in Ella town
Little Adam’s Peak is generally considered one of the area’s more accessible walks, although the trail still includes slopes and steps. Ella Rock is a longer and more demanding hike and should only be included when the group has sufficient time, suitable weather and an appropriate fitness level.
Adventure activities may also be available, but operating conditions, age restrictions and safety requirements should be checked on the day.
After sightseeing, the family enjoyed dinner in Ella before returning to the hotel.

Day 9: Ella to Yala and a Wildlife Safari
We left Ella on Day 9 and travelled towards the Yala region.
Along the way, we stopped near Ravana Falls to enjoy the scenery and take photographs from a safe location. Water levels and viewing conditions depend on recent rainfall.
Later, the family joined a jeep safari in Yala National Park. Yala is home to elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles, water buffalo, monkeys, numerous bird species and Sri Lankan leopards.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed because the animals move freely in their natural habitat. The experience is about observing the park’s ecosystem responsibly rather than expecting to see every species during one safari.
After the safari, the family checked into their hotel and enjoyed a well-earned rest.
Overnight: Yala or Tissamaharama area
Day 10: Yala to Mirissa and the Southern Coast
On the final day of the main tour, we travelled from the Yala area towards Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
After checking into the hotel, the family had time to enjoy the coastal atmosphere and visit local viewpoints when conditions allowed. Mirissa is known for its beaches, restaurants and relaxed seaside character.
We ended the day with dinner beside the sea, reflecting on the different landscapes and experiences shared during the journey.
Whale-watching excursions generally depart early in the morning and require additional time in Mirissa. Travellers interested in this activity should normally add another night and confirm that sea and operating conditions are suitable.

Departure Transfer: Mirissa to Bandaranaike International Airport
The family’s international flight departed after the main tour, so we arranged a separate transfer from Mirissa to the airport.
Because the flight was scheduled for later in the day, there was time for selected stops along the southern coast. Depending on flight time, traffic and individual interests, these may include:
- A responsible sea turtle conservation centre
- A viewpoint associated with Sri Lanka’s traditional stilt fishermen
- Unawatuna
- Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Not every stop will be suitable for every departure day. International check-in time must remain the priority, and the route should be shortened for morning or early-afternoon flights.
We then travelled to Bandaranaike International Airport using the Southern Expressway. Saying goodbye was emotional because the relationship had grown beyond that of a driver and guests. After travelling together and sharing so many experiences, we parted as friends.
